What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is a term coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash. It has since taken on the meaning of an interconnected virtual reality, which its creator envisioned to be one day even more important than the physical world.
The metaverse is new and the concept is still developing.
The metaverse is the 3rd dimensional version of internet, where people will interact with each other through a virtual world that replicate aspects from our own reality rather than just browsing webpages.
Major technology businesses like Facebook (now called Meta) are committing themselves to building the metaverse.  Already, early metaverse experiences are available, in the form of hardware like Oculus Rift and the hugely successful game experience Fortnite.
The metaverse is like a new frontier for creativity and innovation.  Just as people were asking "What's the internet?" in 1990s, it might seem hard to understand now - but those who take time learn about this future will open great opportunities that others could never imagine before.
